Pocketalk sells handheld translators at $299 for the S2 and $349 for the S2 Plus, each shipping with a five-year eSIM data plan. Caliptic is $1.99 a month on the phone you already carry, and it needs no connection at all.
A device built around a data plan
The clearest sign of how Pocketalk works is what comes in the box: a five-year eSIM plan, with replacement SIM cards sold separately for $85 (their store, September 2026). The translation is not happening in your hand — it is happening somewhere else and coming back. Caliptic has no somewhere else. All 22 languages are on the phone, so an aeroplane, a basement or a country where you never bought a SIM makes no difference.
Where Pocketalk is genuinely better
Handing a stranger a small dedicated box is easier than handing over your unlocked phone with your messages on it. Pocketalk has one job, one screen and physical buttons, and its battery is not shared with maps, photos and everything else you drained today. In a shop or a clinic, that simplicity is real. Caliptic’s answer is table mode — put the phone down between you and the top half of the screen flips around, so nobody has to hold anything.
