Pack your languages with your passport
Before you fly, download the language of where you are going over hotel or home Wi-Fi. From then on it is yours: no foreign SIM, no roaming bill, no hunting for a café password. If your plane lands at midnight and nothing works, the app still does.
Hand the phone over, or share an earbud
Put the phone on the table and the screen splits: the top half turns around so the person opposite reads in their language. Or split one pair of earbuds — you take one, they take the other, and each of you hears the other in your own language. Neither of you needs to learn anything first.
